Not What You Would Expect

The first season of The Vampire Diaries is now available on Netflix. So, out of sheer curiosity I decided I wanted to give it a try. I expected this series to be cliche and tawdry. After the few minutes I had already decided that it was not what I expected. There were no sparkling vampires and the story lines were well developed and engrossing. Before I knew it, I had watched the first five episodes.

The storyline follows two vampire brothers who were once in love with the same woman, Katherine. She was a vampire and is also the one who turned the two brothers into the vampires that they are. This all took place in the 1800's. Both brothers, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) were in an active relationship with Katherine and were blissfully happy until the town's founders decided to go on a vampire hunt. All of the town's vampires were put in a church and a fire was set. However, they were all protected by a spell which locked them in a room beneath the church. There they sat like prisoners, starving, until the present day.

Returning Home

These episodes all take place in a small town called Mystic Falls, which is located in Virginia. Season one starts off with the brothers returning home to Mystic Falls around 160 years later, both for very different reasons. Damon wants to break the spell and free his beloved, Katherine. Meanwhile, Stefan falls in love with a relative of Katherine's, who just happens to mirror her image. That girl's name is Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and even after she discovers the truth about Stefan and Damon, she admits that she is still in love with Stefan.

I don't want to ruin it for those of you who have not seen it yet. The series is quite intriguing. Each episode is packed full of action, suspense and romance. It's quite hard to walk away from. The series in currently in its third season.

What's Different?

I expected a version of Twilight. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were not one in the same. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Twilight fan. There were similarities. A Human girl falls in love with a vampire (Stefan). Stefan's diet consists strictly on animal blood alone. However, if you are not a Twilight fan don't count The Vampire Diaries out just yet. The story lines are what keep this show going.

It is most certainly a recommended watch. If you like vampires or even if you are just into some fast-paced action- The Vampire Diaries is something you are sure to enjoy. It has became a quick obsession for me. I cannot wait to start watching season two.

So, what do you all think? Like it, love it, hate it? Let me know in the comments below.
